The movie was influenced by the Coen brothers' 1996 film with exactly the same title. Tolman was praised for her performance as Minnesota police officer Molly Solverson. Vanity Fair stated it was clear that Tolman, "calmly" and "assuredly" took over the show. Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) as well as Golden Globe nominations were given for Tolman's role.
